How should I format page numbers in my document?

Answer

Page numbers may appear in any location on the page (bottom middle, bottom right, upper right), but must be consistent throughout the work.

Pages preliminary to the body of the text must be numbered with lowercase Roman numerals. Do not number the title page but count it in the preliminary pagination. The body of the text is numbered with Arabic numerals beginning with the first page of the main text.

When working in MS Word, consult this guide for instructions on creating two sets of page numbers. You will need to create different sections in your document by inserting a section break, and edit the header and footer area of each section to deselect the "link to previous" option. Then, with your cursor in the first section, go to the format page numbers menu to select lowercase Roman numerals ("i, ii, iii, ...") and press OK. Next, place your cursor on the first page of the main text (usually Chapter 1 or Introduction) and go to the format page numbers menu to select "1, 2, 3 ..." from the dropdown. Change the page numbering option to "Start at" 1 instead of continuing from the previous section.

Note: If you have any landscape-oriented pages in your manuscript, you will need to apply special formatting to the page numbers to maintain consistency with the portrait pages. View detailed instructions for landscape pages.
