How do I archive a website that is part of my dissertation, capstone or thesis?
Answer
This depends on what you used to create the website. If you used WordPress (or CUNY Academic Commons), you have the option of submitting a backup/export of the WordPress site OR you can create archived version using a site called Conifer.
Conifer is a free, online service that allows you to create an archived version of a website by "recording" it in a standard web archive (.warc) format that can be downloaded and "replayed" offline. You'll need to create an account on the Conifer website, then input the URL of your site. Click on every page of the website that you want to save (or "capture"). When you are finished navigating through your site, you can download (export) the WARC file of your website, which you will then attach to your submission in CUNY Academic Works.
In CUNY Academic Works, you’ll first attach a PDF of the manuscript, then check the box that indicates you have additional files to submit and press SUBMIT. In the next screen you’ll be able to add any additional files, including the WARC file or .zip file of a backup/export. WARC files tend to be very large, so if you run into any difficulties (or server timeout) you can also send us a cloud storage link to the file by email and we can attach it to your submission.
