Does a video count as a digital component? How do I submit a video in my dissertation, capstone or thesis?
Answer
A video does count as a digital component, so the Digital Manifest and Note on Technical Specifications would be required.
Some options for hosting/submitting video include:
- YouTube, Vimeo, Internet Archive – provide the full URL
- Depending on length, submit mp4 files to the library with the PDF
- Embedded on a website that you provide a URL for
We have some multimodal dissertations in our collection that you can look at for inspiration, and our digital dissertations guide has further examples and guidelines.
Here are two that you may want to look at for options:
- This one has a video embedded on a website belonging to the author: https://academicworks.cuny.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4275&context=gc_etds
- Here is another that the author attached an mp4 with: https://academicworks.cuny.edu/gc_etds/4610/
You’ll also need to decide how to reference the video piece throughout the text – you might consider including screenshots if appropriate, but students choose different methods of doing this. You can be creative with the way you present the multimodal nature of your dissertation, as long as your committee agrees with your decisions and ultimately approves what you've done. The library will work with you to preserve your dissertation in whatever format it ultimately takes.
