Can I use something that I previously published in my dissertation, thesis or capstone?

Do I need to cite my previous work if I include it? And what are the format requirements when re-using my own publications?

Answer

If you are not reproducing the article word-for-word, then your main concern would be related to academic integrity and avoiding the appearance of self-plagiarism. You do not need to list the article in the bibliography unless you specifically cite it. For example, you might use language like: “As I’ve discussed previously, […]” and include an in-text citation for your own publication. In that instance, yes – it goes in the bibliography. Otherwise, acknowledging the published version in the Acknowledgments section (see library format guidelines) and/or by including a note at the start of each chapter with a citation to the published version is sufficient.

If you are reproducing large chunks of a work word-for-word but have made some minor alterations, you should still consult the publication policies (author’s rights information) for the journal where the article appeared. If you transferred copyright to the journal publisher, then you’d be relying on your right to fair use when reproducing portions without permission unless reuse in your thesis is a right retained by the author when publishing with the journal. Thus, you may need to request permission to include it in your dissertation. Some publishers have begun affirming author’s rights to reuse in a dissertation as part of their general policies. MIT Libraries maintains a list of publishers and links to associated policies on dissertation reuse here: https://libraries.mit.edu/scholarly/copyright/theses-copyright/theses-and-article-publishing/

For formatting, you’ll need to compile everything in line with our usual requirements – we do not allow reuse of a publisher’s formatted version. The chapters should all be double-spaced, and figures/tables may need renumbering to keep them distinct throughout the dissertation (usually you can insert a decimal numbering system, so chapter 1 figure 3 might be fig. 1.3). References and any supplemental content may be collated at the end of each chapter instead of the end of the dissertation.
